I've decided to purchase a Fortigate 60D so I can learn and start really understanding how everything works. I should have the device within a few days (waiting for shipping). I've downloaded the PDFs from Fortinet's site, but I'm not really sure where to go from here.
If I think about this like math, I know I need to learn basic math before moving on to calculus. I'm not new to networking, or even to Fortigate devices.I've worked on some of the older devices and even have a dusty old 50B sitting beside me that I was given. I have a reasonable understanding of many of the concepts, but admittedly my knowledge has a lot of room for improvement. Are there any good resources that explain all the concepts in depth? With examples? Even better yet, are there any (for lack of a better term) network simulators that might help me with visualizing? These seem like devices that are capable of magic in the hands of a wizard, but I'm just a mere apprentice.
How do I learn the sorcery? If your company happens to be a partner, all the FCNSA and FCNSP training and proctored labs are now free. Just pick the 'training' tab at partners.fortinet.com. This also includes the NSE 5 training-FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager. Also, if you have access to Fortinet downloads-through owning a licensed product-you can load the FortiGate VM on a VMWare, HyperV, KVM, etc. For training.
Without a license, you will get all basic features for 2 weeks. I used multiple FortiGate VMs on HP G5s for my own training, and I still spin them up now and them for POCs with GNS3, hardware switches, and other virtualized hardware. Note that the trial license does not include FortiGuard or VDOMs. I've been going through the training now. I find the videos to be tough to watch, a combination of 'death by powerpoint' and a guy reading long scripts often in a monotone voice. Some of the quiz questions are unnecessarily difficult and vaguely worded.
For example, series 201, quiz 3.I've tried a few times and just haven't been able to pass it. I'm very interested in the VMs, but I haven't found them in the list of downloads. I've logged in to my support.fortinet.com account, and do have active products.
Clicking download, then Fortigate, and clicking down gets me to the various firmware images but I don't see any VMs. Not sure where to go from there. Could you point me there?
I really couldn't get through the videos. In each lesson plan, these is a copy of the PowerPoint in pdf format. The narrator is basically just reading the text, so I just went through these in detail before doing the FCNSP lab.
Videos are ok to watch in the background while you are doing something useful. The firmware images are in the dowload folders. For example, for FortiGate, go to 5.0 or 5.2 - 5.0.10 or 5.2.2 - then look for any file starting with FGTVM. They have OVFs, HyperV, KVM, and Zen format.
Same deal for FortiAnalyzer, FortiManager, and many others.
